New Fee Policy FAQs (Effective Nov 2, 2026)

FAQs

What’s changing and why?
For many years, we have kept the same out-of-pocket cost across our consultation types, including longer appointments that require additional time and clinical care.
While we have worked hard to keep fees stable, Medicare rebates have not kept pace with the rising costs of providing high-quality general practice care. These costs include staffing, medical supplies, technology, facilities, accreditation and the time required for your doctor to provide thorough care. We have delayed this change for as long as possible. regrettably, it is no longer sustainable for us to continue charging the same out-of-pocket cost for both standard and long consultations.

From 2 November 2026, the out-of-pocket cost for a long consultation (Medicare item 36) will be increased to $99.00. This helps ensure we can continue to provide safe, comprehensive care and maintain the level of service our patients expect.

Where can I find a comprehensive fees list?
You can find a current comprehensive list on the fees page.
Please note this will change to align with the new policy on 2nd November 2026.

What is the difference between the consultation fee, Medicare rebate and out-of-pocket cost?
The consultation fee is the total amount charged by the practice for your appointment. If you are eligible, Medicare pays a rebate after the consultation. The out-of-pocket cost is the amount remaining after that rebate has been paid.

For example:
Out-of-pocket cost = Total consultation fee −Medicare rebate

For a long consultation from 2 November 2026, the out-of-pocket cost for a 30-minute consult (long/complex) will be $99.00.

How do I know whether I need a standard or long appointment?
15-minute ‘standard’ appointments are for treating more straightforward medical needs.
Examples include:

 1-2 simple medical issues
 Repeat prescriptions
 Coughs and colds
 Cervical screening
 Care plans (GPCCMP)
 Mental health treatment plan review (with no significant changes)
 Initial iron infusion appointment
 Skin check (1-2 spots)
 Shared care pregnancy follow-up
 Peri/Menopause follow-up
 IUD removal
 Cryotherapy
 Sports injury
 Acupuncture follow-up

30-minute ‘long’ appointments are ideal if you have multiple health issues or require more
involved care.
Examples include:

 Mental health treatment plan
 Skin check (full body)
 Shared care pregnancy initial consult
 Peri/menopause initial consult
 Peri/menopause health assessment
 IUD pre-insertion consult
 ADHD Assessment

What if my appointment needs longer than expected?
Sometimes a concern is more complex than expected or additional issues arise during the consultation. If a longer consultation is needed, your doctor will discuss this with you where practical.
You may be asked to book a further appointment if there is not enough time to safely address all concerns during your scheduled consultation.

Are children, pensioners or concession-card holders bulk billed?
Doctors of Northcote is a private billing clinic, so we don’t offer bulk-billed medical consultations however, concession card holders and children under 16 are eligible for a $10.00 discount on all appointment types on weekdays until 5PM.

What if I just need a medical certificate?
If you’re an existing patient who has attended the clinic face-to-face in the last 12-months, you might be eligible for a fully bulk-billed medical certificate consult.
These consults are telehealth exclusive appointments that last ~7.5mins to assess your symptoms and issue a 1-3 day medical certificate. During this consult it may be determined that you should come in for a follow up to further investigate the nature of your ailment.

What if I am worried about the cost?
We understand that healthcare costs can be difficult. Please speak with reception before your appointment if you are concerned about fees. Our team can explain the expected cost, available Medicare rebate and the most suitable appointment type for your needs.

Who can I contact if I have questions?
Please contact our reception team before your appointment. They can explain the expected fee, Medicare rebate and appointment options, and help ensure you book the appropriate length of consultation. Alternatively you can email our management team on manager@doctorsofnorthcote.com and 2ic@doctorsofnorthcote.com.
