Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness for Dads

Support for Fathers and Male Carers

Dr Sybil Borthwick

November 12 – 18 is Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week. As it is also Men’s Health Month, Doctors of Northcote would like to acknowledge the importance of fathers in the life of a new baby. We recognise the enormous impact that pregnancy and new parenthood has on individuals, relationships, families and work.

According to Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA) “around 1 in 20 men experience anxiety or depression during their partner’s pregnancy, and up to 1 in 10 new dads struggle with anxiety or depression in the year following the birth of their baby.”

Sadly, these symptoms are often under recognised and under reported. If you or someone you know is having difficulty adjusting to the enormous life changes associated with a new baby, there are many resources available which can provide help and support. Your GP is always happy to discuss your concerns, and can provide advice and referral if you need it.
