Many of you would be familiar with Dr Derek Buckley, who in our opinion is one of Melbourne’s most experienced GP’s! We thought you might like to know a little more about him…
How long have you been a GP? I graduated in 1978. I worked for three years at Box Hill Hospital as a junior doctor then an additional two years in England for further training in Anaesthetics and Obstetrics. I joined a rural practice in Victoria where I worked as a procedural GP from 1984 to 2011.
How long have you been practicing at Doctors of Northcote? Six years.
What motivated you most to become a doctor? Since my early years I’ve always had a keen interest in helping people whether it was mowing lawns or running errands. That combined with a fascination in science and health led me naturally into choosing medicine as a career.
What is your favourite holiday destination? I have really enjoyed my holidays in Malta. It is surrounded by the bluest waters of the Mediterranean, has incredible historic sites, great food, and lovely, warm people.
What is your favourite book? My favourite author from my school days was Thomas Hardy. I have recently re-read all of his novels and enjoyed them as much today as I did back then.
What is your favourite movie? I prefer good quality medical series to a movie; for example Cardiac Arrest from 1994, and Trust Me from 2017. I also really like watching British Crime series.
What is your favourite food? I really enjoy a really good cup of coffee. I have my own stove top coffee roaster and regularly roast my own green beans at home.
Do you have pets? Our family has always had dogs. Around 5 years ago we adopted two adult rescue dogs which was a first for us having always had puppies. It’s been a delight to see their confidence and trust in us grow after their previous experience of cruelty and neglect. They are now very spoilt members of our family.
What is your favourite past time? I mainly like spending time in the garden but I also enjoy making cider, bread, cheese and sausages.
What are your top 3 highlights of your life? My family, graduating as a doctor, learning to fly a light aircraft.
